Oh Shopping Cart, Where Art Thou?

My current favorite periodical is Gastronomica - a lovely quarterly journal of food and culture, with very few ads. In the current issue, I came across an interesting article about The Stray Shopping Cart Project by artist Julian Montague- he photographs stray shopping carts as they are found, and classifies them as scientists would:

Makes you view shopping carts in a slightly different light, no?

On a similar note...I just discovered another periodical similar to Gastronomica, called Meatpaper.
As the title suggests, it discusses meat and the culture that surrounds it. I haven't read the actual magazine yet but I am totally intrigued by the cover art alone (yes, that is a suit made of meat!!):

I did take a peek at this one article available on their site about MEATY COCKTAILS! Yes folks...like "The Beefytini (on offer at the Circle Bar in New Orleans) is a combination of Beefeater gin, vermouth, and jerky juice (a brine and jerky mixture), a meaty twist on the dirty martini. The Seattle-based Jones Soda Co. sells a “Turkey and Gravy” flavored soda, as well as a holiday season ham variety".

Hmmm ..jerky juice and ham soda!!
I think I will have to hunt down this mag and take a peruse...

Make Your Own Fabric!

I came across this cool company, Spoonflower, where you can design and make your very own fabric! I learned how to sew earlier this year, so I already have a stockpile of fabric that will *one day* be a nifty dress or top....check out some of the designs the crafty inclined have created:

Hope everyone had a great holiday...and the super thing is, the weekend has just barely started! :)

Covet, covet....

I saw the cutest cat food bowls by Alessi in this shop today:

We haven't gotten our cats holiday gifts, so perhaps this is in order...(but really would just be something cool for us to look at)...meow!

Alessi does have some pretty cool stuff...these juicers are pretty funny:

Marzipan

So for Christmas dinner this year, I wanted to make a Buche de Noel cake (a roll cake in the shape of a Yule Log) and decorate it with marzipan mushrooms, acorns, and the like. After going to several stores and not finding ANY marzipan, I found a recipe and made some from scratch- which was suprisingly pretty easy. So I thought I'd post some lovely marzipan finds today...first- check out Red Cake artist Elide Endreson's SUPER AWESOME marzipan TEETH! (Sweet tooth...get it??)

The Hungarian parliament, in marzipan...

Super cute marzipan fruit- and love the little fish..

Ok- so these super creepy babies were part of a
hoax that claimed they were made from marzipan- but turns out they are not tasty baby candies, but just hella creepy polymer clay sculptures by Camille Allen. Shudder.

On that note....happy holidays and stay healthy and warm!!!

Gifts for Your Pussy...and More!

OMG...what cat owner wouldn't want this Cat Play House for their little pussy?

The fighter jet is also pretty sweet:

I just discovered
Ponoko - a pretty neat site where you can shop as well as make and design all sorts of goodies that are made on demand, like this cool, very affordable light:

I wish I'd known about this site earlier this year, when we were shopping for a new light fixture for our dining room! I found that it was hard to find a unique, cool, non-Ikea but not crazy expensive light fixture....this is the Viso pendant light we ended up in case you're wondering:

And here is one gift that I can't imagine anyone wanting...really...edgy elf??? WTF??

Makes me wonder what an edgy Santa would wear.....?

New Work by LissaIvy Tiegel + Daniel Ross/Red Cake's 1st Birthday

Red Cake is hosting another live event this Saturday, December 6th, featuring new work by Lissa Ivy Tiegel and Daniel Ross. We're super excited and hope you can come by to see the show! And it also happens to be Red Cake's very first birthday - yup, we launched one year ago and time has just flown by - I'll be baking up a birthday cake if that's any motivation to swing by :)

Hope to see ya'll on Saturday!
